Are the Samples Public Domain?
« on: March 19, 2010, 12:18:15 PM »
I've had very good success with the program I'm writing till I tried to weld together some routines from a sample skeleton into it. I was able to modify the sample a bit and use it as a separate module that works on its own, but the question comes up now:

"Can I use the modified sample as part of a program I would distribute or sell?"

I imagine by the time I finish modifying it, there will be little left of the sample and more of my own work, still the question remains.

No.

The samples are free to anyone that owns Emergence BASIC, but they are not public domain unless so stated.  If you were to republish them in print form you should ask the permission of the original author first.

They are free to use in your own programs, which is what I am sure you meant.

Hi Paul,

Yes, I meant to use in my own programs. What I specifically mean is let's say I compile a program that includes some or all of "draw." Do I need the author's permission to distribute the program as my own work? Let's say I uploaded the code for the program to CM. Am I in line with the general "deserada" by giving an honorable mention to the author if it has been mentioned in EBasic who that is? Obviously I'm asking so I know when to reinvent the wheel or when I can use an "off the shelf" wheel. In the engineering world, if I buy a pulley and a belt and incorporate it into the design, I can patent my design as using the pulley, but I can't patent the pulley itself as my own invention. Are we similar to that in the code issue?
