You can use ANY coding language you like so long as the Software can be run on Windows XP or Vista (sorry for 95, 98, ME, 2000, Linux, Mac, and other Platforms)

The Entry must be your (or your Team's) own work. You must have the rights to Distribute all content. (sound,Graphics, dll's, engines etc.. etc) If you don't then don't include it. Link to where you can get it in Dependencies

So Coding Monkeys is looking for Sponsors to help supply some prizes .. We are hoping to get Marketers of Coding related Software to Provide some. (This will be a great way for them to get their products / Name out to potential coders) If you would like to or know of someone who would like to help sponsor this or future contests them please contact monkey1@codingmonkeys.com with your details

Your Entries (yes you can enter in any / all categories multiple times .. but can only claim one prize category if you win you'll be awarded your highest .. if you get the same rank in multiple categories then you can choose which one you want to claim..)

Entries must not have been released prior to the start of the competition.. (eg: you can't enter old codings that have been entered into other contests or distributed anywhere else including here on CodingMonkeys)

No . Mods and levels etc for existing software don't count as an entry

All entries to contain (in a Zip file) the distributable (eg: .exe), media, screen shot and source code (which will remain yours to decide what to do with at the end of the contest.. Source code needed to confirm its your own work. It will not be issued out to the community unless you state you wish to do so.)

All entries are to be emailed to monkey1@codingmonkeys.com. they shall all remain hidden until the end of January (to keep your ideas from the competition.. you can of course decide to share ideas or code if you like) then the entries will be stripped of the source code and then placed in a special downloads area for members to Download and Vote .. (all entries will be scanned for Viruses prior to being placed for download)

Entries will be Judged by your fellow community members. (only one Vote per IP address / Member will be accepted per category)

Voting will end at the end of February

The contest will be Canceled only If I don't get at least 3 entries in each category (after all i can't give out prizes if there are no entries ;) )

Sounds like some entertaining development.  Hmmm will there be any guidlines/rules or will this be an all out creative project in the 2D/3D/App Genre?

Anyways Cameron,  I have moved from your area to Brisbane, and got myself a some steady employment as a script coder/engineer and D.S.T.  Ha ha at last I have some free time.  I am up that way every 2nd weekend so give me a yell if you need any H/W etc.

Thanks

ALL Coding must be posted in the right Category.. (eg: level editors,Utilities to be posted in Non Gaming)

Eh! And text based games?? :)

Considering I am doing one for sometime now, and wouldn't be done according to contest rules, I also suggest besides the contests, make something like oscars cerimony each year for coding monkeys programmers programs :P

If your text based games have 3d graphics as well then they'd go into 3d catagory. Else they'd go in the 2d category..

games can be multi player or single player.

as for the oscars type idea .. Coding monkeys would need to get more members posting their stuff..

If we get enough entries there can be one that could get a special award.. like a golden Monkey or golden banana which would have its own special prize which overrides all other winnings..

1st october - 31st january will be the coding time?

Anyway, coding a text based game would mean that coder would start working not from 0 but below 0...

For curiosity, I remember just one coding contest, and was even before I start using IB (just by checking old news). This means this will be the 2nd contest?

You can start now if you like.. I thought that 4 months would give everyone plenty of time.. I think that one month contests are too short and make for rushed entries.. where they could be improved.

As far as i know and can remember this is the First Contest that Coding Monkeys has held. But yes I've been involved in running other contests. From memory one on TIBI (The IBasic Insider) and one when i was involved with helping moderate the Liberty Basic community Group on Yahoo.. where I also ran a newsletter for LibertyBasic. There could have been others as well.. but like i say This is the First one on Coding Monkeys to my recollection.

Hi Cameron,

thanks for holding the contest. It will give us thinBasic user a nice opportunity to work on our skills.

Question: Is the contest only for individuals, or are teams allowed too?

so far i've posted news about CMCC2009 on about 10 different dedicated programming sites.. and the posts have had about 1000 views all up. Lets hope that a lot of them will turn into entries.

So far I have an offer of another prize from an INDIE Programmer. Come on you others who write/distribute codding languages and utilities / services this is a great way to get your products in the for front of a lot of programmers

There is great interest being shown on the ThinBasic Community's Forum about this contest so much so its electric. They are putting together a team.. teams and Indie's are both welcome to enter.. how about trying to put together a team using your favorite language.

Don't forget that the CM community are those that are voting for their favorites and best entries.. so just because you don't have a team doesn't mean that your not going to win. sometimes the simple things are better ;)

Who will decide who wins? If it is only voting, I'm a little worried that people from the different communities will encourage their community to vote for them, and we will have a battle for the strongest community, not the best game.

Only members here. I'll also be watching for any underhanded tactics like that. I'd like to think that the members here at Codingmonkeys are better than that. but if i see something like that happening i'll definatly do something about it.. If a program is definatly not up to the standard of the voting then that'll be apparent to ALL.

I've also been a member in the other codding communities and don't think that ANY of them would be unfair like that because they are all coders too.. its not a language v language contest but the coders skill in  doing what they have to to get their codding working. We arn't playing for sheepstations (or oilwells) well not yet anyway maybe a few years down the track when we've attracted a lot of sponsors

Does non apps also includes non game related tools and utilities?  For example, if I want to make an application would that count here?

Yes .. its .. Non Games .. not Non Apps..

Any sort of app / utility game related or not goes on there.. eg: a new programming language , Graphics software, Data base, word processor, level editor , installer  etc... etc...

At least 3 coders from the Basic4gl community are entering too .. It seems that this contest is indeed going to be very popular to various programming languages ;)

I'm doing a C++ wxWidgets application. Its no game (also no maths program this time ;)).

Got the core of the program working already, though there is a lot of work to do before it can be used.

While I suspect that you can enter a program into each of the 3 catagories,
is it allowable to have multiple entries per catagory?
For example, can someone enter 3 or 5 non-Game utilities,
or would that be unfair if someone could win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize.

you can enter as many trimes as you like in as many categories as you like as well or all in the same category..

However you can only win 1 prize only .. It will be the highest ranking that you have.. if you have more than one entry in different categories then it'll go by the highest ranking prize. If your entries are both of the same rank in the different categories then you will be able to choose which one you'll get..

The nest highest ranking entries will then move up to take your other entries place in the prizes

Thanks Blue Steel for clarifying for me the submission guidelines.

For voting guide lines,

will someone who uses a good premade engine (like the Blitz3D SDK dll) and only has to write a few lines of their own code be judged as highly as someone who codes all their own routines?

Like wise, with professionally made and purchased graphics vs. home made ones.
I would hate to see someone lose out to someone with a fatter wallet than theirs.
In other coding contests I have seen where all the contestants get the same graphics set.
This levels the playing field.
And no it does not stiffle creativity, it makes it so you HAVE to be more creative than the next guy.

ummm... i duno.. its up to the members here on CM they(you) are the ones who will be voting.

that being said.. there are ways around that.. you can form a team.. eg: have someone work on Graphics.. another on sound .. etc...

I can't set standard sets of audio or graphics as its an open ended contest..
Don't forget that the software remains your property and you can sell it (either through the shop on Coding Monkeys) or where ever. this contest isn't necessarily for community code. in those languages that can make stand alone software their code won't be distributed unless they state so or don't say no to distribute code. (ie if they leave that field blank then the code will be distributed with their software) .. of course those that use languages that can't make standalone (ie: interperated languages
) will naturally have to have their code distributed.
