I'm not sure when exactly they did the name change, but RealBASIC is now known as Xojo. They have been saying for months that major changes were to be expected and it appears they were correct. Although it isn't open source, the new product is very much like LiveCode in that the multi-platform IDE and language is completely free to use and a license isn't require until you decide to deploy your application.

This is a very interesting system. From what I can see, with the little time I have spent with it, development is fast. The IDE is free, but to fully develop (distribute) costs about $1,000.

Hi guys,

Interesting .. but here's my problem (from their Language Reference)..

Graphics/Multimedia:

Quote
A
ArcShape
C
Canvas
CMY
Color
CurveShape
D
DarkBevelColor
DarkTingeColor
DisabledTextColor
F
FigureShape
FillColor
FrameColor
G
Graphics
Group2D
H
HighlightColor
HSV
I
ImageWell
L
LightBevelColor
LightTingeColor
M
Movie
MoviePlayer
O
Object2D
OpenPrinter
OpenPrinterDialog
Oval
OvalShape
P

P cont.
PixmapShape
R
Realbasic.Point
Realbasic.Rect
Realbasic.Size
RectShape
RGB
RGBSurface
RoundRectShape
S
SelectColor
StringShape
T
TextColor

It provides only basic ovals, rectangles, pixel handling etc .. no 2D support for sprites - no 3D, except by using OpenGL.

It's hidebound by OOP'y objects and methods.   If no one has written the library code for a particular object and its methods that you need - you're stuck.

Consider the Aurora development, which petered out 'cos nobody could face documenting all the methods and objects. The user guide was bordering on unmanageble, and they hadn't even got to the Graphics department.

It's weighted down by cross-platform support, which is of no interest for me - and it's costly to buy (250 euros) for a licence to create distributables.

Graphics without the OOPiness is available in Creative Basic  - and if you must have OOP (I've yet to see an application that needed it), use IWB.  All very cheap.

Apart fom which, it's the old RealBasic, which I gave away to a charity shop.

all the best, :)

Graham

HiYa Graham!!!

My mention here was of the "informative" type rather than an endorsement of any kind... I too had a RealBasic "studio" license (or whatever they once called it) and never built a single application with it.

I did think that the name change and free use of the IDE (perhaps to learn with) would be of interest or benefit to someone else, otherwise I would have just walked on by without a second glance. :)

Hope you are doing well my friend!

Hi Doc, nice to hear from you ..  :)

Yep, appreciate your comments .. I was just adding my two cents worth regarding graphics, which applies even to the big boys like Microsoft and Embarcadero.  They have no inbuilt facilities beyond GDI either ..  ::)

So I agree, all these systems are interesting and attractive at first glance.  But if folks want to actually create applications, the simple Basic facilities are cheaper and easier to use imho  :)

All's going reasonably well here thanks - apart from the problems of getting old and not so fit as we once were ..  ;D

all the best, :)

Graham

I thought this was a good move for Xojo, however, I am going to finally take up LiveCode again. I think it has better cross-platform support.

I'm hoping to issue a new maintenance release to the IWBasic 3.x IDE in the next few weeks and Larry Sikes has released an update to the Linux version of IWBasic and is currently working on the 64bit version of IWBasic.  Progress should speed up since he has retired and has apparently resolved his m
